Baby John Review:

About Movie:

Baby John is an action-packed movie which stars Keerthy Suresh and Vamika Gabbi along with Dhawan in lead roles. The movie is a remake of Tamil film called Theri, which stars Vijay. Makers of movie Baby John has cleared that; they have made few changes in script and dialogues from official movie.

Script Analysis:

Script: It is written by Atlee, Kalees and Sumit Arora.

At 164 minutes, Baby John feels too long and messy, with hardly any memorable moments. Varun Dhawan, miscast as the lead, struggles with a role that doesn’t suit his style. The rare laugh comes from Rajpal Yadav’s sidekick character, who delivers the best line: “Comedy is serious business.” It even gets more reaction than the hero’s repeated catchphrase, “Par main toh pehli baar aaya hoon.”

In a year when many big-budget Bollywood movies flopped, Baby John might just take the prize for the worst film of 2024.

Baby John, a remake of Vijay’s 2016 hit Theri, is supposed to be Varun Dhawan’s grand entry into South-style masala films, but it barely leaves a mark. Masala movies work when they bring something fresh, but this one feels like a collage of clichés. Why the obsession with ships, docks, containers, and heroes hanging upside down? It worked in Pushpa, but here, it just feels tired.

In a quiet corner of Alappuzha, Kerala, Baby John (Varun Dhawan) lives a peaceful life with his daughter Khushi (Zyanna)—until they run into a human-trafficking gang run by the absurdly named Babbar Sher (Jackie Shroff). Their father-daughter bond feels painfully familiar, like a knockoff of Jawan or countless other films. And, of course, there’s a backstory: Baby John wasn’t always a simple lungi-wearing guy. He used to be a cop, with a sweetheart (Keerthy Suresh) and a loving mom (Sheeba Chadha, Bollywood’s go-to mother figure). It’s all very predictable, with nothing to hold your attention.

Keerthy Suresh has a significant role but shares zero chemistry with Varun Dhawan. Gabbi, playing a teacher with a secret, gets just enough screen time to make her presence count, while Sanya Malhotra appears in a blink-and-miss role.

Varun Dhawan, trying hard to channel his inner Salman Khan with dramatic shirtless moments, even attempts a Pathaan-style climactic scene with Salman himself. Yet, it’s clear—despite his efforts, even an ageing Bhai Jaan effortlessly steals the show. And, of course, the ending hints that another installment is likely on the way.
